about

Thunderegg's latest full-length is the 11-song space bar rock epic Cosmos, recorded by Alan Weatherhead (Sparklehorse, Magnolia Electric Co.) in Oakland and featuring the Bay Area lineup (Alex Jimenez, bass; Reese Douglas, guitar; André Custodio, drums). Packaged in a deluxe gatefold and exploding with guitars, Cosmos is the Egg's deepest plunge yet into space, blending the usual clever lyrics, sweet melodies, and ragged rocking with a layered roar that begs to be blasted. Available May 2018 from Bleeding Gold Records in black vinyl, deluxe red-and-blue splatter vinyl, and all digital formats.

Track Name: Planetarium, Pts. 1 & 2
You got lost on the way and wound up at the planetarium, paid five bucks for the headphones and buried yourself in their stereo. Now it’s dark and there are a billion stars in the sky. The planetarium’s a pretty good place to hide.
The stars up above us are the brightest, the astronomers all say, but where they are is darkness, and where you are is radiant day. Forgive me if effect and cause are mixed up in my mind. The planetarium’s a pretty good place to hide.
If you ceased to shine your light on me, then surely I would die. My heart would freeze over and over and over into my eyes. When I’m with you, heaven and earth collide. The planetarium’s a pretty good place to hide.
A lot of people wish that they were red alert, whoa. A lot of people wish that they were cheap as dirt, whoa. I’d like to thank you for the comforts that you have always provided for me. And I’m sorry that there’s something I still can’t bring myself to believe.
A lot of people call you hypocritical, whoa. I guess that’s why you are so irresistible, whoa. I’d like to thank you for your confidence, but I’m sure I’ll do all right all the same. So don’t chain me to your conflict. The revolution fights on anyway.
We boxed the Civic and we wound up feeling pretty good, whoa. We bought the tickets after cruising round the neighborhood, whoa. But when the lights went down and the laser show started, we were still sitting side by side. There’s only so far that we ever could have parted, and the planetarium’s a pretty good place to hide.
Track Name: As If It Found Someone
Come walk around with me, talkin’ chemistry, and let me hold your hand. Walk up and down with me this city’s hilly streets, I’ll help you understand that out beyond your skull, this world is beautiful. It spins around the sun as if it found someone.
Come take a bus with me, just place your trust in me. I’ll take you anywhere. Come and discuss with me all the cool stuff we see from the window we share. Out beyond your skull, this world is beautiful. It spins around the sun as if it found someone.
Come start a band with me, ride in a van with me, jump from town to town. Fan insanity, rock ’n’ roll fantasy, the love comes raining down. Out beyond your skull, this world is beautiful. It spins around the sun as if it found someone.
Track Name: I Turn Automatic
I was right that I was wrong: Hope you’ll concede at least that much and we can just move on. Like the traps set in the attic, I’m spring-loaded, I get goaded, I turn automatic.
I wasn’t like this when I was young. I was the nice kid on the bike, scared of no one. Aside from time, nothing bad happened. You choose who you’ll give your love to, but I turn automatic.
If a man can win your love, his only chance is giving up. I’ll have to lose you to convince you I didn’t care enough to miss you.
I’ve heard that life’s supposed to be hard. How else can we tell if we deserve to be who we are? The door latch, it cracks like static. Tomorrow I would follow, but tonight I turned automatic.
Track Name: Pleasant Hill
It was a fine day out in Pleasant Hill as the sun began to set. The traffic wasn’t backed up till the graveyard out in Lafayette. I watched your lips move silently as you counted or you prayed for all the crosses piled like they’d been dropped there by a thousand planes. All those crosses in the light, do they have an address? Do you write care of the afterlife to say it’s a shame that we never met?
It was a fine day out in Pleasant Hill as the night began to fall. The traffic stalled and then stood still, as if someone had painted it on a wall. Can I talk to you honestly? Can I tell you I’m afraid? Can I ask what this world wants of me, and what if I don’t want to obey? And will you run away with me, or am I someone you’ll forget? Do you ever wonder what it’d be like to say it’s a shame that we never met? On this side I’m afraid we messed up again. On this side of the hill, should we prepare for the trees to be torched and the earth laid bare, for the mountains to rise up and puncture the sky, revealing what’s holding it up from behind, peeling away what was just a disguise, so that all we are left with is the truth and the light? Or do we say somehow it’ll be OK?
It’s a fine night out in Pleasant Hill amid the taillights’ glare. We haven’t spoken, but we will. The cars aren’t going anywhere.
Track Name: Cosmos
We drove to the lake because we couldn’t reach the ocean. The lake is to the ocean what the ocean is to space. And as we made our way toward our universe, as if slow motion, the water shimmered gently like a smile across its face. We removed our shoes before its silent invitation, then stepped into the coolness, let it carry us away from the lake down to the river, rushing through civilization, rushing through the humans, rushing on to reach the place where the ocean takes us over. We explode into a vapor, and guided by the moon, we rise and slowly drift away. We drove to the lake because we couldn’t reach the ocean; the lake is to the ocean what the ocean is to space.
Track Name: Stupid Town
If you are different, you’ll get kicked around. Nobody’s interested in this crowd. If you’re invisible, you will get loud. I hear you’re miserable in this stupid town, this stupid town, no mercy, just this stupid town, this stupid town, no justice.
I was embittered, I was just like you. No one was listening to what I knew was true. But out there glistening is someplace new. My life is history in this stupid town, this stupid town, no mercy, just this stupid town, this stupid town, no justice.
Nobody sought my thoughts or heard a word I said. They left me their cold breakfast as if that could serve instead, but the waffles tasted awful and I wished that I was dead. None of this exists if it’s not on your GPS, and if this is living, tell me why I haven’t left this stupid town, this stupid town, no mercy, just this stupid town, this stupid town, no justice.
Track Name: Where Are the Cars
Where are the cars going tonight, shot through a chute with no visible ending? And who is behind their wheels, and who is on their minds? Where are the cars going tonight? Did they remember to say goodbye, or did something just tell them to drive?
I’m sorry, but the stars don’t seem to be showing tonight, engulfed by the glow at the horizon’s bending. Or maybe a man did steal them straight out of the sky and laid them in the lap of his baby on the passenger side.
Roll down the windows, open the roof. Dial the seat back, behold the moon. The traffic thins out, the air grows cool. The city lies behind us: I can’t see if you’re still with me.
I thought I glimpsed something dancing in my brights. You said you saw it, too, but you might have been pretending. And who knows what it was, but now it’s gone from sight. Where are the cars going tonight? Did they remember to say goodbye, or did something just tell them to drive?
Track Name: Goddamn Love
I eat plants because of you. I think I know a fellow who fainted in the Record Vault, he was so starvated, but he wouldn’t say it was your fault. I knew what he needed: all that you’d depleted. Bacon on everything that was on his plate, yeah, but he kept his mouth shut because of goddamn love.
Birthday party shakin’, when they rolled the cake in, the candles were more than she was able to handle. They were enough to light a grocery store. But he had baked it, slavin’ away in the kitchen, so she took a breath and thought up a wish that she’d always have plenty of goddamn love.
What else are you gonna do, than take the love that’s offered you? A little broken but a little brave, hoping that you feel the same. God is good and God is great; if God is love, then he must really hate all the promises he’s got to make, all the begging just for you to take his goddamn love.
Track Name: I Almost Cry
I really think there’s something that’s the matter with my eyes. It seems that everything they see turns into perfect little lies. They say they see right through me and they get me so confused that when we met, they almost wrecked me because you’re too good to be true. I was lucky when I met you, lucky when you took me back, lucky when I lie beside you every morning in the sack. Now it’s almost kind of funny how we almost said goodbye before we even said hello, and now I almost cry.
I also think there’s something that’s the matter with my ears. It seems whatever people tell me isn’t close to what I hear. If you tell me that you love me, then I’m pretty sure you cursed, and if you tell me that I’m good, I’m pretty sure that I’m the worst. I had always thought that I’d have made it by now, I’d always thought I’d be successful, but I didn’t know how. Didn’t know that you would save me, didn’t know why you would try. To think I thought I hadn’t made it, now I almost cry.
I sometimes get the feeling that I don’t know how to feel. I get this numbness in my fingers and my heart just turns to steel. But then you took my hand, and then you held it to your face, and my fingers started twitching and my heart began to race. Do you want to stand together before everyone we know? Do you want to hold each other and then never let go? Just thinking of forever used to make we want to hide. Now if I ever think of losing you, I cry and cry.
Track Name: Lucky So-and-So
I am the one with shabby clothes, a scar across my crooked nose, and she is the prettiest girl I know. She looked at me, and me she chose. I’d say I know why, but no, I don’t. I’m just a lucky so-and-so.
There was a time when I was sure I’d get all the good things I deserved. I’d stand by the wishing well while some other guy would help himself.
F that jive, I’m just too old. Now I cut the line and roll the bones. I’m just a lucky so-and-so. I’m just a lucky so-and-so.
Track Name: Math Song
One plus one, my love, is two. One plus one is me and you. But when you’re gone, it’s not the sum: Me times nothing is no one.
You sat in front of me in math, I started looking forward to class. I started doing homework, too, to have something to do with you.
One plus one, my love, is two. One plus one is me and you. But when you’re gone, it’s not the sum: Me times nothing is no one.
’Twas good that I was bad at math, I needed so much help with that. I got matched up with someone smart to school me and then school my heart.
One plus one, my love, is two. One plus one is me and you. But when you’re gone, it’s not the sum: Me times nothing is no one.
